ABOUT THE WEDEMEYERS:
Charlie Wedemeyer, the 1989 Eagle Aloha Bowl Sportsman of the Year and former all-star running back for Punahou High School and Michigan State, has been a winner for most of his life, and these days he's still beating the odds.
Thirty years ago, during his first year as varsity football coach for Los Gatos High School, near San Francisco, Wedemeyer was stricken with amyotrophic lateral scierosis (ALS), or Lou Gehrig's disease, and was told he had only one to three years to live. Today, at 60, he is a quadriplegic, but his mind and wit are as sharp as ever.
Unable to breathe on his own, Wedemeyer is totally dependent on a respirator, and he can no longer speak. His wife Lucy, reads his lips serving as an interpreter--a busy job, since Charlie often lectures the public about his disease, his love of life and his faith in God. Lucy also works as a Realtor in the Bay area.
Wedemeyer and Lucy say they reaffirmed their Christian beliefs during his worst health crisis in 1985. As Wedemeyer lay in the hospital, too weak to eat or to breathe, they prayed with a nurse until the crisis passed and Wedemeyer was able to breathe again. They gave their lives to Christ, together, that night.
Although no longer varsity football coach, Wedemeyer is still coaching in the football program at Los Gatos High—he’s only missed one practice in eighteen years (He was in the hospital with pneumonia)! Through Lucy and his nurses, he lectures at Bible studies, churches, schools, camps and prisons.
Charlie Wedemeyer can no longer speak, but his message of hope rings loud and clear: "Pain is inevitable, but misery is optional" he says through his wife, Lucy, who reads his lips. "It's a choice we make in response to adversity."
Charlie and Lucy Wedemeyer have been inspirational role models for people of all ages for many years. Charlie, a standout quarterback and flanker at Punahou School and Michigan State, coached the Los Gatos High School football team to a 78-18-1 record over the course of his coaching career as a varsity head coach, before being diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Charlie continues to coach for the freshman team today.
Charlie and Lucy have founded the Charlie Wedemeyer Family Outreach, an organization offering support to those terminally ill, disabled and overcoming personal adversity. Charlie and Lucy have shared their message of hope and encouragement throughout the United States and Europe and are thankful for the opportunity to share it with literally millions more throughout the world with this DVD.
