PRODUCERS' NOTES:
Nathan Aweau and I have wanted to do an all-instrumental album for some time now, and we are quite pleased with this project. We invited some of our good friends to play along with us...Ernie Cruz, Jr., Imua Garza, Gaylord Holomalia, Orama Brault, Shawn Ishimoto, Pat Simmons (from the Doobie Brothers) and Pat Simmons, Jr. What started out as a Hapa CD turned into a spectacular collaboration between Hapa and these great talents.

"It's a Slack Key World Compilation" honors the Spanish cowboys (vequeros) who were responsible for bringing the first guitars to Hawai‘i in the 1800's, the masterful guitar building of Steven Grimes (whose double-hole "Beamer" model guitar was used on every song) and also the legacy and musical genius of Gabby Pahinui. I have always been fascinated with slack key since hearing the music of Gabby Pahinui over 20 years ago, and I am happy to see that this form of music is now getting recognition by music fans as well as other accomplished musicians.

We hope you will enjoy listening to this CD as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Come be a part of our slack key world! - HAPA
In 1792, British explorer George Vancouver presented Hawai‘i's King Kamehameha III the gift of cattle. About forty years later, to help manage the overpopulating cattle, Kamehameha III invited Spanish Cowboys called "Vequeros" to his Kingdom of Hawai‘i to share and teach their ranching skills. Some of the Vequeros brought their guitars and are responsible for introducing the instrument to the people of Hawai‘i.

To emulate the sound of two guitars played by the Vequeros, the Hawaiian guitarists started to loosen the guitar's tuning keys, "slacking" the strings to inventively create their own opened-tuned guitar. This slacking of the strings enabled the player to keep tempo with the thumb while simultaneously plucking the rhythmic bass parts, as the rest of the fingers played the higher melody of the song.

In the mid-70's, slack key recordings made by Hawaiian music icon Gabby "Pops" Pahinui were distributed throughout the world. Many were profoundly moved by the brilliant mastery of Pahinui's seminal works, and many were inspired by his recordings. Almost 30 years later, the music Gabby left behind is played internationally on World Music radio stations and continues to inspire generations of musicians.
